Experience digital democracy

The "Digital Democracy" project is dedicated to the tense relationship between digitalization and democracy. While hate comments, shit storms, fake news and conspiracy theories contribute to the polarization of political debates, digital participation projects offer the opportunity to involve citizens directly in the legislative process. Students are also confronted with technology (e.g. dealing with software and AI applications or the expectation of basic digital interaction and collaboration skills). This makes it all the more important to understand the complex interrelationships between digitalization and democratization and to learn how to shape them productively and to discuss key concepts and theories that shed light on the interplay between science and the development of democracy.

As part of a course in the winter semester 24/25 entitled "Future of Democracy", an interactive workshop format for the planned "Digital Democracy Camp" (DDC) will be developed together with students from all disciplines. An AI will be created and then used for the development. Students will be involved in the work steps as they determine the focus and content of the DDC. Presentations and interactive participation formats are planned to bring together experts, students and external KIT visitors to discuss digital democracy.

How can digital democracy be defined?

The term "digital democracy" describes a form of democracy in which digital media are used to promote democratic processes. This includes informing the public, the exchange of political opinions and the active participation of citizens. Digital democracy is characterized by the provision of information via online channels, dialogue in digital forums and new opportunities for participation such as online petitions or digital citizen surveys. It stands for the development of a democratic practice that increasingly relies on digital communication and interaction to make political participation more accessible and transparent.
